We study both experimentally and numerically the convective flow in a tall vertical slot with differently heated walls. The flow is investigated for the fluid with the Prandtl number Pr=26, which is large enough to ensure the traveling waves as primary instability and small enough to prevent boundary layer convection. The flow evolution is determined on the base of the visual observations, power spectra and amplitude analysis. In the numerical simulations of two- and three-dimensional flows, we accept an assumption of an infinite fluid layer. The satisfactory agreement with experiment is observed, and the sequence of convection states is discovered. It starts with a plane-parallel flow as primary solution, which becomes unstable to two counter-propagating waves. It is followed by a tertiary three-dimensional flow in the form of wavy traveling waves. As the Grashof number is increased even further, a chaotically oscillating cellular pattern consisting of the pieces of broken waves arises. The formation of a structure in the form of the vertical rolls chaotically modulated along axes concludes this complicated picture.  相似文献

Stability of a plane-parallel flow of a nonuniformly heated binary mixture filling a vertical layer located in a field of gravity and in a high-frequency vibrational field is studied. The axis of vibrations is directed along the layer. The case of rigid and isothermal boundaries of the layer impermeable for the mixture is considered. The influence of thermal diffusion on the evolution of the admixture and the thresholds of flow stability is taken into account. The study is performed on the basis of equations for averaged fields. An asymptotic method with the use of the perturbation wavenumber as a small parameter is applied in the long-wave limit. For arbitrary values of the wavenumber, the limit of stability was determined by numerical integration. In the present paper the diffuse and localized necking models according to Swift [Swift, H.W., 1952. Plastic instability under plane stress, Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 11–18], Hill [Hill, R., 1952. On discontinuous plastic states, with special reference to localized necking in thin sheets. Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids 1, 19–30] and Marciniak and Kuczyński [Marciniak, Z., Kuczyński, K., 1967. Limit strains in the process of stretch-forming sheet metal. International Journal of Mechanical Sciences 9, 609–620], respectively, are considered. A theoretical framework for the mentioned models is proposed that covers rigid–plastic as well as elastic–plastic constitutive modelling using various advanced phenomenological yield functions that are able to account very accurately for plastic anisotropy. The mentioned necking models are applied to different orthotropic sheet metals in order to assess their predictive capabilities and to stress out some potential sources for discrepancies between simulations and experiments. In particular, the impact of the applied hardening curve and the equibiaxial r-value, which was recently introduced by Barlat [Barlat, F., Brem, J.C., Yoon, J.W., Chung, K., Dick, R.E., Choi, S.-H., Pourboghrat, F., Chu, E., Lege, D.J., 2003. Plane stress yield function for aluminium alloy sheets – part 1: theory. International Journal of Plasticity 19, 297–1319], on formability prediction is investigated. The sharkskin surface instability is commonly observed in the extrusion of polymer melts. We present a series of experiments in which a specifically designed rectangular slit die with insulated and independently heated sides and is used to induce precise temperature gradients across a flowing polyethylene melt. Our previous experiments demonstrated that the character of the surface distortions produced by the sharkskin instability was a function of the die wall temperature and therefore the extrudate had viscoelastic properties at the surface. In this paper, we explore the role of temperature and viscoelastic property gradients near the capillary wall. The amplitude of the sharkskin instability is quantified and plotted against apparent shear and extension rates. Analysis of the data demonstrates that the amplitude and frequency of the instability is independent of bulk temperature and temperature gradient and is dependent only on wall temperature. The data are normalized using a dimensionless Weissenberg number based on the extension rate to collapse the data collected over all temperatures and gradients onto a single master curve. We conclude with an example of a rectangular extrudate exhibiting varying surface roughness due to differential die heating and discuss the implications of our observations on the sharkskin surface instability mechanism and on commercial applications.  相似文献

General laws of the processes of generation and amplification of secondary perturbations in oscillating viscous fluid flows are studied theoretically. The stability and receptivity are analyzed with reference to perturbations generated by fluctuations of the flow rate of Poiseuille flow induced by small two-dimensional roughnesses of the channel walls. It is shown that the presence of roughness leads to excitation in the flow of perturbations at all multiples of the main flow oscillation frequency. Using the Fourier transform along the streamwise coordinate, the problem of calculating the frequency harmonics is reduced to a system of equations of the Orr-Sommerfeld type interrelated via the oscillatory component of the main flow. On the basis of an investigation of the analytic properties of the Fourier-image it is shown that upstream and downstream of the roughness the perturbation can be represented in the form of a superposition of modes of the time-dependent Poiseuille flow. The modes are classified and their spectrum is calculated. The structure of the mean-square fluctuations generated by free perturbations is investigated. Examples of calculating the evolution of forced perturbations are given for cases in which the scattering of the oscillations of the main flow on the roughness leads to the generation of one or two modes growing downstream.  相似文献

We study the simultaneous one-dimensional flow of water and oil in a heterogeneous medium modelled by the Buckley-Leverett equation. It is shown both by analytical solutions and by numerical experiments that this hyperbolic model is unstable in the following sense: Perturbations in physical parameters in a tiny region of the reservoir may lead to a totally different picture of the flow. The local dynamic instability of autonomous conservative, lumped-mass (discrete) systems, is thoroughly discussed when negligibly small dissipative forces are included. It is shown that such small forces may change drastically the response of these systems. Hence, existing, widely accepted, findings based on the omission of damping could not be valid if damping, being always present in actual systems, is included. More specifically the conditions under which the above systems may experience dynamic bifurcations associated either with a degenerate or a generic Hopf bifurcation are examined in detail by studying the effect of the structure of the damping matrix on the Jacobian eigenvalues. The case whereby this phenomenon may occur before divergence is discussed in connection with the individual or coupling effect of non-uniform mass and stiffness distribution. Jump phenomena in the critical dynamic loading at a certain mass distribution are also assessed. Numerical results verified by a non-linear dynamic analysis using 2-DOF and 3-DOF models confirm the validity of the theoretical findings as well as the efficiency of the technique proposed herein.  相似文献

There are different excitation mechanisms that cause fatal damages due to undesirable vibrations in heat exchanger tube bundles subjected to cross-flow. One of them is the fluid-damping-controlled instability (galloping) that is characterised by a sudden appearance of large amplitudes of the tubes exclusively in cross-flow direction. This paper reports on investigations using an experimental set-up in a wind tunnel where the galloping mechanism in a tube bundle can be observed as an isolated phenomenon. The apparatus allows to realise several tube bundle configurations and geometry's of real heat exchangers. The position of a flexible test tube with a linear iso-viscoelastic mounting inside the tube array is variable. The test tube is equipped with dynamical pressure sensors which are placed directly under pressure holes inside the tube. For the investigation of the acting fluid forces the non-stationary pressure distribution is measured simultaneously at 30 points on the circumference in mid plane and at 15 points in line along the tube together with the tube motion. The acting fluid forces are determined by integration of the whole pressure field process. The study gives insights into the effect of the fluid-damping-controlled instability that is still not fully understood. Moreover, a flow visualization gives an impression of the mechanism at relevant Reynolds-numbers. The results show that in case of instability due to galloping the correlation length of the forces acting along the tube axis increases suddenly to large values. The fluid forces are correlated well for the whole tube when galloping is dominant. The exciting fluid forces show harmonic character and lead to a classical resonance behaviour. Instead of a simple free vibration test in vacuum or still air, which is done mostly for fluid excited structures, the damping coefficient of the oscillating system is determined under operating conditions on the basis of the measured fluid forces. A comparison of the results with those of a free vibration test in still air is shown. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献
